Is once-defiant Mahwah about to blink in ‘hateful’ staredown with state?

Mahwah is on the verge of walking back two controversial ordinances blasted by the state Attorney General as “Hateful” laws that targeted an Orthodox Jewish community.

Attorney General Christopher S. Porrino alleged that Mahwah feared an influx of Orthodox Jews from New York when it wrote the laws.

Mahwah council unanimously passed the parks ban over the summer and Bergen County Prosecutor Gurbir Grewal told the Mahwah police chief at the time not to enforce the rule.

Mahwah requested last month that the state’s case be moved out of Bergen County Superior Court to the U.S. District Court in Newark, citing the attorney general’s claims that the township violated federal law and the U.S. Constitution.
