A prayer circle and teepees that the Ramapough Mountain Indians set up in Mahwah violate township zoning laws, a Superior Court judge ruled Friday.
Judge Roy McGeady found the tribe liable for 39 of 43 zoning violations issued by the township in a months-long squabble that landed in superior court.
The tribe must pay $13,699 – $10,300 for 103 violations each valued at $100 – plus $33 in court costs for each violation.
McGeady acquitted the tribe of violations issued for having a renewable energy trailer on the property because a representative for the tribe went to town hall and asked two township workers if a permit was required prior to the 20-foot shipping crate’s arrival.
