MAHWAH – A new county road-clearing plan is being tested during the first snowfall of the season in a cooperative effort between township and county agencies.
Mayor William Laforet said Saturday the county is assuming direct responsibility for pre-staging, pre-treating and plowing the borough’s five county arteries, a task previously shared by the township and a private contractor.
“The county department is based in Hackensack, but Mahwah is at a higher elevation and usually gets snow and ice first,” Laforet explained.
Laforet said Mahwah’s Department of Public works previously took responsibility for salting county roads, which delayed treatment of local streets.
