Mahwah residents seek to recall mayor

MAHWAH – Mayor Bill Laforet, who has come under fire for criticizing the Township Council over ordinances that allegedly discriminate against Orthodox Jews, is facing a recall effort for the second time in his seven-year tenure.

LAFORET: Mahwah mayor not backing down after ‘no-confidence’ vote.

Residents spoke of fears that the eruv signaled ultra-Orthodox communities in New York State would spread into Bergen County, and they complained of overcrowding at local parks, particularly by Orthodox Jews from New York. After Laforet criticized the council, members responded by voting “No confidence” in his leadership, accusing him of ignoring legal advice by commenting publicly about the state’s investigation.

A separate group of residents attempted to recall Laforet from office in 2015, but fell well short of the signature threshold.
