MAHWAH – Police are seeking two suspects who were caught on camera appearing to damage the expanded Rockland County eruv Sunday night, the third reported act of vandalism to the Jewish boundary since July.The images show a middle-aged man dressed in a black shirt ripping away pieces of the PVC pipes that mark the eruv from a utility pole on Airmont Avenue near Masonicus Road just before 7:30 p.m. Sunday, Police Chief James Batelli said.
Since July there have been multiple reports of damage to the eruv, which travels across the New York state line into Mahwah and Upper Saddle River.
In August, Mahwah police observed damage to the eruv along six utility poles on and near East Crescent Avenue.
Slim plastic pipes affixed to a utility pole in Mahwah are part of a new eruv, a symbolic boundary that allows Orthodox Jews to perform tasks outside their homes that usually are prohibited on the Sabbath.
