Mahwah mayor says town could lose $10M over alleged Orthodox Jewish discrimination

MAHWAH – Two days after the state’s attorney general accused Mahwah of illegally discriminating against an Orthodox Jewish community out of fear and hate, reeling town officials will have to face residents in the first town council meeting since the explosive allegations came to light.

“We will have some discussions on how to proceed and in what way. Right now, I don’t know what that will be,” Mahwah Mayor William Laforet said Wednesday.

The town used the sign ban to order the removal of lechis over the summer and a federal lawsuit was filed against the town to keep them there.

Activist groups urged town officials in Mahwah to come together to reunite the community after comments about the ordinances turned vicious in public meetings and especially over social media.
