Mahwah council introduces 'no-knock' ordinance to limit soliciting

MAHWAH – The Township Council introduced an ordinance Thursday night that would clamp down on neighborhood soliciting, amid rumors of aggressive solicitation by members of New York’s Orthodox Jewish population.

The ordinance has received a strong public backing from residents, more than 200 of whom packed council chambers Thursday night.

While reports of solicitors in Mahwah have not been confirmed, the ordinance highlights a growing fear among residents that communities of ultra-Orthodox Jews will try to expand across the state line by buying up real estate.

Bergen County Prosecutor Gurbir S. Grewal ordered the Mahwah Police Department not to enforce the ordinance, calling the regulation a possible violation of constitutional rights.
