Letter: The Record’s shameful take on Mahwah, eruvs

Slim plastic pipes affixed to a utility pole in Mahwah are part of a new eruv, a symbolic boundary that allows Orthodox Jews to perform tasks outside their homes that usually are prohibited on the Sabbath.

The real reason behind putting up eruvs in Mahwah appears to be for the purpose of expanding Orthodox footprint into northern New Jersey.

As the editorial points out, the people in Mahwah should be wary that when communities are transformed by a large Orthodox Jewish population, priorities for public school and zoning laws are radically changed to accommodate the new majority with no regards to the new minority population.

No one should have their right to practice religion infringed upon and everyone needs to work together to resolve their differences, but it is time for The Record to atone for its attacks on the people of Mahwah.
