Controversial Mahwah Parks Ordinance Could Be Repealed

MAHWAH, NJ – A controversial ordinance banning non-residents from using township parks could be repealed soon.

“The council is set to introduce an ordinance Thursday repealing the provisions of the previous ordinance. The new ordinance permits”residents and non-residents” alike.

The parks ordinance generated a significant amount of controversy from nonresident Orthodox Jews, including those from nearby Rockland County, New York, who saw the ordinance as an attempt to try and keep them from using town facilities.

The county prosecutor told township police not to enforce a new municipal ordinance prohibiting people from other communities from using township parks on the grounds that such enforcement violates the U.S. Constitution.
